Human-Made Global Warming Led to Two in Three Heat Deaths in Europe This Summer

An early analysis examining 854 major cities revealed that human-caused climate warming accounted for approximately two out of every three heat-related fatalities in Europe this past summer.

Study Findings and Methodology

Public health experts and climate scientists linked 16,500 of the 24,400 summer fatalities between June and August to the exceptionally high temperatures brought on by greenhouse gas emissions.

The preliminary analysis, which uses established scientific methods, found that climate change made city temperatures 2.2°C hotter typically, greatly increasing the number of deaths due to dangerously warm weather.

“The causal chain between fossil fuel burning and increased temperatures and higher death rates cannot be ignored,” commented one researcher. “If we had not persisted in using carbon-based energy in recent years, the majority of these deaths would not have happened.”

Impact on Vulnerable Populations

The study revealed that older people were the hardest affected by the extreme temperatures, including 85% of those who died over 65 years of age and 41% above eighty-five.

“Most of heat deaths occur in homes and hospitals, where people with existing medical issues reach beyond endurance,” explained a public health specialist. “Yet, high temperatures is rarely listed on death certificates.”

Personal Tragedies

A number of victims who lost their lives outdoors were named in regional news reports. One 77-year-old man in Spain fell ill during walking in August, amid temperatures as high as 45°C.

Another incident concerned a 47-year-old parent of four in Italy’s north, who died while laboring at a building site close to Bologna, as temperatures reached 38°C that day.

“He called my mother to tell her he would come home for a meal,” stated his son. “That he would be home around midday.”

Public Health Dangers and Appeals for Action

Experts warn that the danger from heat is still underestimated, despite mounting proof of the deadly impact.

“No one would expect a person endangering themselves laboring in a storm or hurricane winds,” remarked a scientist. “But dangerous heat continues to be treated too casually.”

Although Europe’s cities are more prepared for dealing with extreme heat than during 2003, emergency services face challenges to keep pace with increasing temperatures and a growing elderly demographic.

Medical professionals have called for local action plans when heatwaves, additional green spaces in cities, and improved access to cooling systems among vulnerable populations, including older residents.

“Without act now, the toll will rise,” stated an adaptation expert. “It is essential to urgently phase out fossil fuels and implement measures that protect those most at risk during ever-more deadly heatwaves.”
