Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
