WHO Issues Warning Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Injections

Fewer than one in 10 patients eligible to benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy have access to them, warns the global health agency as it publishes its first recommendations on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now obese, it is calling for increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be managed with thorough and ongoing care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key hurdles to universal availability to the injections that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, explains the organization.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even in the current best projected outlook, the supply of such drugs might only reach about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, according to the WHO.

The guideline urges nations and manufacturers to increase access, via strategies such as patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Function

These medications imitate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance the sense of being full so people eat less.

People usually start to lose weight after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Studies suggests people may put most of the weight back on within a year of halting the treatment, because their usual hunger return.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your risk for contracting diseases, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
